Issue No. 01  ·  vanderseller.com

A network of
expat
communities.

Built for the organizers who run them, open to everyone who joins one.

Merchants of many origins, meeting peacefully at a Mediterranean harbor — a painterly scene evoking the trading-post tradition at the heart of Van Der Seller.
Plate I — Merchants of many origins, a harbor town.
02 — Spirit of the name
Our cargo is belonging.

“Van Der” is Dutch/Flemish for of the / from the — a naming convention built around where you came from. For centuries, traders from the Low Countries took that question and made it a way of life: crossing borders, keeping ledgers in three languages, and building a networked web of trading posts where strangers became regulars. The Hanseatic towns, the market squares, the harbor guilds — these weren't shops, they were community infrastructure for people who lived between places.

And this isn't the story of military colonizers. Sellers and settlers who crossed the globe to trade played a different role — carrying goods, languages and ideas between places that needed each other, helping both sides. When it worked, the world got a little smaller through commerce rather than through conquest.

Modern expats are their descendants. They move between languages, cities and lives, and they need places to land. Van Der Seller builds the modern equivalent of those trading posts: structured spaces where expat communities form, recurring questions get answered once, and — because no expat community is really an island — a post from Nice surfaces for readers in Cannes, Dutch diaspora chatter reaches Düsseldorf, and “how do I do X here” stops being asked for the hundredth time.

We run the core network ourselves. Organizers host their communities on top. Those who want their own shingle can take the white-label version.

The name is trilingual on purpose — English seller, Dutch van der, French vendre. What we move isn't goods. Our cargo is belonging.
